Our Mission

We rescue any and all animals who are abused, abandoned, and at imminent risk of neglect. Pronking Pastures Rescue and Sanctuary will ensure the animal receives the medical care, love, and attention needed, whether through responsible adoption or at our sanctuary.

About us

Pronking Pastures Rescue and Sanctuary (PPRS) is a small rural all volunteer/foster based rescue just West of Missoula. PPRS has been rescuing animals for over ten years, but recently became a 501 c 3 nonprofit in 2020. ‘Pronking’ means the ‘happy run’ of an alpaca, and alpacas were the first animal that the rescue/sanctuary started to work with. We found out quickly that there are not a lot of livestock rescues in the state of Montana and we found our niche; PPRS wanted to become a haven for livestock that have been abused and neglected. In 2019 we started to focus our rescue on rescuing dogs and cats that met our rescue’s criteria. PPRS wanted our rescue to be a place where all animals can ‘happy run’.

The veteran community is also something we are very passionate about. One of Pronking Pastures Rescue and Sanctuary founders, Travis Williams, lost his Marine squad in Iraq in 2003. When he came back to the United States, he found purpose in rescuing and working with unwanted animals as this became therapeutic. Most of all the volunteers at PPRS are veterans or have ties to the veteran community. PPRS wants to offer a comfortable and inviting spot for our fellow comrades.

Our Purpose

Pronking Pastures Rescue and Sanctuary has four main purposes

Rescue and Adoption

We rescue or assist with placement of animals in need to ensure responsible placement and adoption of the animal

Sanctuary

We offer a sanctuary for animals that don’t meet adoption criteria and we ensure proper care of the animal throughout their lives

Iris’s Mission, added in 2021

Rescuing animals from shelters who are on the euthanasia list or who exhibit trauma behavior and have been deemed unadoptable. PPRS provides rehabilitation strategies for these animals

Spay and Neuter Campaign

Responsible pet care starts with spay and neutering. ‘We can not adopt, warehouse, or rescue our way out of dog and cat over population’. Shelters are overpopulated with unwanted pets due to irresponsible breeding

Adoptions

To us it is extremely important for us to match a pet with their perfect forever family. As we can’t ensure a successful 100% guarantee fit we pride ourselves on doing our due diligence. We want to ensure that the pet never comes back to rescue and that we are just the stopping point for them on their way to their next chapter, their forever family.

We first conduct an interview. This lets us get an initial feel to understand if you and your family would be a good fit for the pet. We will give you the good, bad, and ugly about the animal you are inquiring about to ensure you are aware of personality and behavioral conflicts and growth that can/could occur. If both us and you feel the animal would be a great fit, we move on to sending you an application to fill out and have our board review. The nice thing of having multiple eyes on an adoption/application is we can think outside the box and add different perspectives and insight then just one body. Once your application is approved, we move onto a meet and greet and home visit. This is to make certain your home is the right home for your new family member. We can see how the animal behaves in their new environment and offer guidance if needed. All animals reside in foster homes/private homes. We require an approved application before a meet and greet can occur.

Our process could be considered rigorous to some, but the animals we are assisting are not typical. We are rescuing the most deprived and most needed of rehabilitation and it is important for the new family to understand and have patience with their new family member. We want to ensure that everyone is happy and excited about adding a new family member, but we don’t want to take away from the obvious hard work and some difficult nights adjusting. We appreciate every applicant’s understanding in our process as we feel this benefits not only the animal but the person.
